"The Two Towers" is a great, amped-up continuation of the Fellowship。 Alot is being setup and we get better looks at the inner-workings of the fight against Sauron。Samwise definitely became my favorite character during this read through。 His stout heart and goofy wit wom me over; and not a bad cook to boot!I am looking forward to finishing up this yearlong read along with the r/tolkienfans sub! I know this is one of those books I'm supposed to love, but it just feels like wading through mud; plot development is slow and I don't really care for any of the characters。 It feels like a book one would enjoy only if they had ample appreciation for Tolkien's world-building, which unfortunately isn't me, yet。 I know this is one of those books I'm supposed to love, but it just feels like wading through mud; plot development is slow and I don't really care for any of the characters。 It feels like a book one would enjoy only if they had ample appreciation for Tolkien's world-building, which unfortunately isn't me, yet。 。。。more

The quest for Middle-Earth continues as the Fellowship strives to deliver the ring of power to Mt。 Doom。 I am not sure how these books could get much better。 They are amazing!

If you'd asked me before I started re-reading I'd have said this was my favourite LOTR volume。 It's got so much! Ents, Rohan, helms deep etc。 But this time around I did prefer fellowship quite a bit。 Still great to read it again。Now looking forward I can't really remember what fills out return of the king? Feels like all the major events are done with。 I guess I'll find out when I pick this thread back up again If you'd asked me before I started re-reading I'd have said this was my favourite LOTR volume。 It's got so much! It's been at least 14 years since I last read this。 Honestly I've been nervous to, fearing it would no longer hold up。 Thankfully I was wrong。 Yes, Tolkien's writing style does of course take getting used to。 But once you do, he sweeps you away into middle earth with some of the most beautiful prose you will ever read。 Excited to keep rereading。 It's been at least 14 years since I last read this。 Honestly I've been nervous to, fearing it would no longer hold up。 Thankfully I was wrong。 Yes, Tolkien's writing style does of course take getting used to。 But once you do, he sweeps you away into middle earth with some of the most beautiful prose you will ever read。 Excited to keep rereading。 。。。more

Helm’s Deep is overrated, fight me。The Two Towers was a very good read, albeit one I didn’t quite like as much as Fellowship。 Tolkien’s great writing is still there, and there were once again many events I loved reading for the first time。 Certain parts especially were greatly change when this was adapted to film, so reading the original version has been interesting。Overall, and this almost led to me docking a star, I just don’t think the events in The Two Towers are as interesting as Fellowship Helm’s Deep is overrated, fight me。The Two Towers was a very good read, albeit one I didn’t quite like as much as Fellowship。 Tolkien’s great writing is still there, and there were once again many events I loved reading for the first time。 Certain parts especially were greatly change when this was adapted to film, so reading the original version has been interesting。Overall, and this almost led to me docking a star, I just don’t think the events in The Two Towers are as interesting as Fellowship。 The first half especially suffered again from some slow pacing like the first half of Fellowship, and despite some cool moments with Treebeard, it really just didn’t hook me。 I wasn’t kidding at the beginning of this review, Helm’s Deep really don’t that exciting。Luckily, the second half made up for quite a bit of this。 Frodo and Sam’s journey with Gollum had far more interesting pieces than what I remembered from the movie。 I loved their meeting with Faramir especially, and the fight with Shelob was appropriately epic。Overall, The Two Towers is still a great book, just not as good as the series’ first。 Hopefully, Return of the King will deliver a fittingly epic conclusion。 。。。more
Caden Chambers,
Tolkien's most well developed character is indeed the world and I firmly believe this book along with the previous book is what all world building should strive to be, however I think that's really all that this book has going for it with a few exceptions。 The fellowship of the Ring was a mysterious slow-burn with what I consider to be perfect pacing, The Two Towers is way more action packed yet also too slow at times and I feel it never hits that sweet spot。 In the first half of the book things Tolkien's most well developed character is indeed the world and I firmly believe this book along with the previous book is what all world building should strive to be, however I think that's really all that this book has going for it with a few exceptions。 The fellowship of the Ring was a mysterious slow-burn with what I consider to be perfect pacing, The Two Towers is way more action packed yet also too slow at times and I feel it never hits that sweet spot。 In the first half of the book things just resolve too quickly or happen without I feel the necessary time to settle in。 The 2nd half is quite boring and only picks up after the first 4 chapters of book IV, but becomes more interesting after that。 I also think that the book had a bad structure and my problems with it could be mended by simply not dividing the Rohan and Mordor chapters into different parts。 My favorite part of the book is the ring changing Frodo in subtle ways as they get closer to the domain of Sauron such as the ring feeling heavy or the ring making him more commanding。 In general I feel the hobbits have had better development in this book also。 tldr: Fellowship of the ring but lesser structure and pacing, along with better characterization of the hobbits。 。。。more

Definitely more action-packed than the first book, the stakes are getting higher in Middle-Earth where our Company is continuing on their various quests。 Some great characters were introduced in these sections, like Treebeard and his band of Ents。 Sam really stepped it up in this book as well, and I'm growing even more fond of the guy。 I'm looking forward to seeing how this all ends。 Definitely more action-packed than the first book, the stakes are getting higher in Middle-Earth where our Company is continuing on their various quests。 Some great characters were introduced in these sections, like Treebeard and his band of Ents。 Sam really stepped it up in this book as well, and I'm growing even more fond of the guy。 I'm looking forward to seeing how this all ends。 。。。more

An excellent book and an excellent story。 I’ve been on a nonfiction kick for a few years, and it’s refreshing to be able to delve once more into a world of fantasy and wonder, even one filled with raging orcs and raging war。 Very much looking forward to the final book in the trilogy。

Wow, what a ride。 And all these character names with their names and their background stories。 It seems as if Tolkien knew the history of every single leave in Middleearth。 I really felt as if I was there。 Of course, it helped that I've listened to it while stoned。 Turns out that is the only way I can deal with all these perfect specimens - one 'fairer' than the other。 And taller。 And stronger。 And *use superlative of your choice here* Wow, what a ride。 And all these character names with their names and their background stories。 It seems as if Tolkien knew the history of every single leave in Middleearth。 I really felt as if I was there。 Of course, it helped that I've listened to it while stoned。 Turns out that is the only way I can deal with all these perfect specimens - one 'fairer' than the other。 And taller。 And stronger。 And *use superlative of your choice here* 。。。more
